London: John Murray, 1864. Half Calf. 2 Volumes. Vol I, pp vii, 556, frontis (portrait) ; pp v, 578, frontis (portrait). Half calf and marbled boards. Some rubbing to leather. Small gilt crest to lower spines, no other markings. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Some foxing to prelim pages only, text clean and clear. A handsome set. Napier (1782-1853) served in the Napoleonic wars in the Peninsular and 1812 campaigns. He later served in India, appointed to command the British Army there in 1842. He led campaigns in the Sindh and Punjab and as Commander in Chief in India quarreled with the Governor General Dalhousie over the latter's brutal policies, returning to England a couple of years before he died.
