Oxford: Henry Cripps, 1638. 5th Edition. Original Calf. Pp. [xiv], 78, [2], 218, [4], 219-723, [1], [9 table], [1]. Original calf re-cased. Front free endpaper and first three leaves are damaged on outer edge with loss of text. The next 16 leaves have outer marginal damage. Heavily stained on top outer edge of the last third of the book causing weakening of the corner of the page's strength, minor loss of text and crumbling in the table. Burton's famous work, first published in 1621, and with 5 editions in his lifetime with alterations and additions, is an encyclopedic treatise ostensibly on melancholia, but of much wider scientific and philosophical import. A good, solidly bound working copy, with 95% of the text perfectly sound and readable. Good. Item #17603
