1876. First. 141 pp. Original mounted photograph frontispiece portrait. (12mo) original stiff printed wrappers. With his father and brother, Patuone was one of the first Maori to have contact with the Europeans when James Cook's ship visited in 1769. The author was a close friend of Patuone in his later years and was therefore in a position to clarify much about Patuone's life to the extent that Patuone was himself prepared to allow. Ink note on the front endpaper reads: "This old chief used to shoot for kiwis on grandfather's land at the Bay of Islands." Wrappers edge worn; torn front cover, foxing; good. Item #410175
